The big league regular season opens up tonight for the Chicago Cubs, and that means prospects throughout the organization are on their way to their minor league assignments (South Bend, Myrtle Beach, and Tennessee at those links, for example).

That includes Albert Almora, who will be heading to AAA Iowa to continue working on his offensive game. I say it that way, because the young man clearly doesn’t need much more work on his outfield defense. He’s just really, really good.

And he did it again yesterday for the Cubs in their final exhibition game, making this diving catch:

To me, the immediate leap-up-and-throw was even more impressive than the catch, which was, of course, a very nice catch.

I also really liked the way Almora protected his body on the dive, leaving his arms and legs up so that nothing could get twisted under him as he slid.

We’ll see Almora soon enough with the big league team, either this year, or next. And it’ll be a treat to watch him do this kind of stuff daily.
