The Chicago Cubs’ lineup for tonight’s game against the Cincinnati Reds has become the new normal against right-handers:
- Dexter Fowler, CF
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Ben Zobrist, 2B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Miguel Montero, C
- Jorge Soler, LF
- Addison Russell, SS
- John Lackey, P
Jorge Soler’s starts in left have been very consistent in the post-Kyle Schwarber era, and Ben Zobrist has consistently been in the three-hole when there’s a righty on the mound.
Matt Szczur had that great start to his season in Anaheim, but the Cubs’ commitment to giving Soler those left field starts seems to be the hold-up in Szczur getting more starts. Given Soler’s considerable upside and the opportunity that the Schwarber injury presented, in terms of patiently giving Soler regular starts so that he can work on his defense and pitch-recognition skills, I can’t argue with what the Cubs have done so far.
Guys like Szczur, and also Tommy La Stella, will still see action, as will Javier Baez when he’s ready to return.
A little note about the lineup from Luis on Twitter:
Four lefties in a row & five of the first six? Alfredo Simon: 25th highest hard hit % allowed to LHB since 2014, 23rd highest wOBA vs. LHB.
