Kris Bryant must have heard me (uh…ya think?).
Just before tonight’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, I made a tongue in cheek comment about Bryant not making solid contact lately (to be fair, he hadn’t!).
Of course, in his first trip to the plate, he hit a 111 MPH rocket over the left field wall, giving the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
That home run (Bryant’s third on the season) came off of lefty Brandon Finnegan, who boasts much better numbers against righties than fellow southpaws. It also came on the road, where Bryant’s power has been mysteriously absent in his young career – 6 career home runs away, 23 at Wrigley Field. (Update: yeah he added a second home run of the grand slam variety in the 7th.)
Check it out:
And then, not one inning later, Ben Zobrist hit a leadoff home run (his first as a Cub), to open up the scoring 3-0. Batting as a righty, Zobrist hit his over the wall in right center field with an exit velocity of 99 MPH. The video is not shareable yet, but you can watch it here at Cubs.com.
EDIT 2: And now Anthony Rizzo went deep! That’s his 5th on the year and the Cubs are up 9-0. Consider this your “Cub home run tracking” thread. I’ll add each of them as they become available.
Edit 3: And now Kris Bryant just hit a GRAND SLAM! His second of the game and fourth of the year, boy is it nice to see him heating up:
A Random Aside: Jake Arrieta is 2-3 with a walk tonight and is hitting .300 on the year. I just thought you should know that.
