OK, so it wasn’t a no-hitter – he’s already got one of those – but Jon Lester was very good once again tonight, as he’s been all season.
And OK, so it wasn’t 16 runs – that didn’t even top their biggest laugher last year – but 8 runs is still a whole lot.
The Cubs scored a variety of ways in this one, from long balls by Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez, to consecutive doubles, to small ball. They even scored a couple of the runs on back-to-back squeeze bunts. Fun times, and another win for the Cubs.
As the Cubs were pouring it on in the 9th, and Cubs fans in Cincinnati overwhelmed the crowd to such an extent that their chants could be heard clearly on the Reds broadcast, Thom Brennaman, who calls games for the Reds, complained about the fans before letting out an “enough already” as Kris Bryant drove in another run. It was total schadenfreude.
And, hey, how about Javy Baez? Great defense at yet another position, and he was all over the place:
