Miguel Montero has been scratched from tonight’s start.
Although Montero was the regularly scheduled starting catcher for tonight’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, he has been scratched and replaced by David Ross, due to lower back stiffness (per multiple reports on Twitter, see below).
Apparently, the back stiffness has been bothering Montero for a few days now – originally beginning in Cincinnati – culminating in today’s late scratch:

Miguel Montero is a late scratch for the Cubs. He has a stiff back which began to bother him in Cincinnati over… https://t.co/ELCUmHDFPu

But before you freak out (or start dialing Wilson Contreras’ personal phone number), you should note that Montero’s injury is considered minor and he is day-to-day. Indeed, he is even available off the bench tonight (which he certainly would not be if it were any bit more serious):
Ross batting 8th, Russell 7th. Montero would be able to catch if Ross had to exit for some reason, but Javy is the emergency catcher.

And the last bit of information is the news that Javier Baez is the emergency catcher (because, of course he is). You obviously don’t want to see either of Ross or Montero taken out of the game for any reason, but seeing Javy Baez catch would be fun (like watching a position player pitch).
With the change, here is the new Cubs lineup for tonight:
- Dexter Fowler, CF
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Ben Zobrist, 2B
- Jorge Soler, LF
- Addison Russell, SS
- David Ross, C
- Kyle Hendricks, P
