Well, then. That’s how you bring home a series win.
The Cubs were thrown for a loop after two pitches when scheduled Phillies starter Vincent Velasquez was pulled with biceps soreness. I say that, because they must have been a little bit, what with the ensuing 3.2 shutout innings from lefty Brett Oberholtzer. Actually, even that I say tongue-in-cheek, because the Cubs had plenty of good opportunities against Oberholtzer and simply didn’t quite come through.
Nevertheless, once Oberholtzer was out, the floodgates opened. The Cubs put up an 8-spot on the strength of strong offensive days all over. More on that in a moment.
That was obviously more than enough to hold up for John Lackey and the bullpen, together with some nice defense behind them.
