After yesterday’s trade for Chris Coghlan, the Chicago Cubs today officially added their former outfielder back to the 25-man roster in advance of tonight’s game against the Braves.
He’ll take the roster spot of Tommy La Stella, who goes on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. La Stella had been hitting .291/.378/.494 off the bench for the Cubs, so they’ll be missing him unless Coghlan is ready to turn his season around. With the A’s, Coghlan had been hitting just .146/.215/.272.
La Stella’s DL stint can be backdated to Wednesday, so he’ll be eligible to return in 13 days, if his hamstring is feeling better. That’s rare, as far as hamstring injuries go, but the severity of La Stella’s injury has not yet been publicly addressed.
That makes two Cubs position players on the DL with hamstring injuries right now (Jorge Soler), and with Anthony Rizzo out of the lineup with back tightness, there’s a lot the Cubs are dealing with right now. Not a bad time to be playing the Braves, though, of course, anything can happen
