david ross cubsThe corresponding roster move for the addition of Tommy La Stella has been announced, and it’s David Ross heading to the 7-day disabled list for a concussion. I don’t recall seeing the incident myself, but there were accounts on Twitter that Ross had taken a foul ball off the mask before departing yesterday’s game.

Ross, 39, has had concussion issues in the past, which makes any concussion or concussion-like occurrence scary, but it also means there’s always going to be an abundance of caution. Ross will miss these last five games before the All-Star break, and then we’ll see where things are after that.

In the meantime, the Cubs will be going with just two catchers: Miguel Montero and Willson Contreras. Montero, who catches today, figures to catch Jake Arrieta on Friday, and may also catch Jon Lester thereafter (which, given Montero’s throwing issues this year, presents a run-wild-yikes situation … but I’m not sure Contreras is ready to catch Lester).

In any case, hopefully the Cubs can get through the next five games without their best defensive catcher. In theory, it should be OK. Montero is no slouch back there, and Contreras brings the big stick.

We’ll probably get a better sense after today’s game how the team plans to handle catching duties until the break.
