us cellular fieldThe Chicago Cubs couldn’t complete their comeback last night, but they’ll get another shot today, against a mightily struggling James Shields.

Shields, 34, hasn’t been quite right since signing his free agent deal with the Padres last offseason (if you recall, he was very close to signing with the Cubs), and hopefully those ways continue tonight. For the season, both his 4.99 ERA and 16.1% strikeout rate are 11th worst among qualified starters, and his 5.26 FIP is 6th worst. He’s struggled badly against both left and right-handed hitters (with the slight edge against lefties), so there are no relevant splits to consider.

Starting for the Cubs, is right-hander Kyle Hendricks. Hendricks has been having the best season of his career (2.27 ERA, 2.5 fWAR), and it’s all due to soft contact. He hasn’t struck out too many batters (21.5%) or been an absolute control freak (6.7%), but his ability to limit the hard contact and create soft contact on balls in play has allowed him to find a lot of success. Like Shields, let’s hope that keeps up tonight.

The game is an hour earlier tonight, so grab a beer (or a pop!), find your favorite seat, settle in, and watch the Cubs try to even this series out (and then maybe take the lead tomorrow before a tough match-up on Thursday).
