wrigley stands crowdThe Chicago Cubs have dropped the first two games of the Crosstown Classic Cup Bowl-A-Rama-ship Series, meaning that even if they win the next two games, the Cup stays on the South Side (a tie returns the Cup to the previous winner) until next year.

Oh darn.

Still, tonight will be an important game to win for the Cubs. No, not because you don’t want to lose three in a row (obviously that would be bad), but instead because the match-up against Chris Sale tomorrow might set them up for a four-game sweep if they lose tonight.

Taking the ball for Chicago is Jason Hammel, who has pitched a bit better here, lately. In his last three starts, for example, Hammel has gone 16.0 IP, while giving up just 5 earned runs on 10 hits, 4 walks and 17 strikeouts; 2.81 ERA, 3.39 FIP. Tonight, he’ll pitch to Miguel Montero, as Willson Contreras gets the night off.

Pitching for the White Sox is right-hander Anthony Ranaudo. The Sox traded for Ranaudo earlier this season, but he has yet to debut with them this year. Today will be his first start at the Major League level, after having made 13 starts at Triple-A in 2016 (3.20 ERA, 4.19 FIP). He’ll pitch to Dioner Navarro, as the White Sox look to clinch the season series, tonight at Wrigley Field.
