The Chicago Cubs are fresh off a series win against the San Francisco Giants, reducing their Magic Number to 11. A series win here in Milwaukee brings that to single digits, regardless of what the Cardinals do against the Pirates this week.

Taking the mound for the Cubs is righty Kyle Hendricks, whose 2.09 ERA is the best in baseball. He’s probably not going to have the peripherals to thrust him to the top of the Cy Young discussion by the end of the year, so, if he wants a real shot, he’s probably going to have to keep shrinking that ERA to a level that becomes impossible to ignore. For example, if he gets that baby under two, it becomes all the more difficult not to have him near the top of your Cy Young leaderboard, regardless of the peripherals (which, by the way, are still rather good).

Opposing Hendricks is righty Zach Davies, who is likely to be a nice pitcher in the long run for the Brewers. This year, the 23-year-old has had ups and downs, typified perhaps by his last two starts against the Cubs: he cruised against them in Milwaukee in late July, but got blown up at Wrigley in mid-August (that was the second time Kris Bryant pulled off the 5-5 with multiple homers feat in the season).

Tip for the day to Cubs pitchers: DON’T PITCH TO KIRK NIEUWENHUIS.
