Just yesterday, we discussed the potential impact of a high-profile vacancy in the Minnesota Twins front office on the Chicago Cubs organization.

Namely, we speculated (along with others) that either or both of Jason McLeod (Senior VP of Player Development and Amateur Scouting) and Shiraz Rehman (Assistant GM) might quickly be considered top candidates for the President of Baseball Operations and/or General Manager job in Minnesota.

Then, earlier today, Jon Morosi confirmed that former Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos is being considered as a top candidate for the President position, before dropping the following (Cubs-related) tweet:

Even though this is a potentially significant development, there isn’t a whole lot I can add to yesterday’s discussion so soon. We already knew that the Cubs have a collection of talented, desired, and (probably) ambitious front office executives. That teams would come calling was something just short of a certainty.

Now it is one for sure.

It’s still not quite clear if McLeod or Rehman are being targeted for the General Manager position, or something higher, but that might be the most important distinction we can make at this point in time. If, for a completely hypothetical example, Anthopoulos is hired as the President, he may want to conduct his own search for a GM (from a short list of his own). That may ultimately include someone like McLeod or Rehman, but it may be someone with whom he’s more intimately familiar. Needless to say, the amount you should be following this story just ticked up quite a bit.

The Cubs haven’t lost many high-profile executives during this regime’s tenure, but it’s bound to happen sooner or later. As tough as it may be to see them go, however, it’s something you have to be happy about if and when it happens. After all, these guys became especially desirable after working for the Cubs.
