It was a very hard day. And such as baseball has the ability to sooth and distract – even when the very thing about which you’re sad is baseball – this game was heaven sent.
Jon Lester cruised, as he has throughout the second half of the season, and David Ross, in his final regular season home game, homered in the 5th inning to put the first run of the game on the board. It was one of those moments, at once joyful and touching, that we needed today. Baseball being so much fun.
It was also particularly compelling, because Ross was honored, in impromptu fashion, throughout the night by the Wrigley faithful, who stood and applauded Ross in each of his three plate appearances, on a curtain call for the homer, and as he was removed from the game by Joe Maddon during the 7th inning.
Good baseball game. Good win. Rest in peace, Jose.
