Hey, did you hear that the long-awaited Theo Epstein extension (and extensions for Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod, too) is done! Woo hoo!
… oh, the baseball game. Well, the good news there is that the outcome doesn’t matter.
The less good news, obviously, is that Jake Arrieta was not at his best, got knocked around, and didn’t leave his final regular season start inspiring the same kind of confidence that he did last time out. We’ll talk more about the implications tomorrow (and, well, for the ensuing 10 days, since he won’t start again for quite a while), but the short version is, it’s hard to say that this means much more than the rest of his up-and-down second half. In two starts, Arrieta has only reminded us of what we already knew: he can still dominate, and he can also struggle. It’s not ideal heading into the playoffs, but this is how it is.
The also less good news is that Chris Coghlan sprained his ankle in left field. The Cubs are calling it “mild,” so hopefully he can be back in a week. We’ll see.
Also, John Jaso hit for the cycle. Bully for him.
