The Cubs have had the Reds’ number all year, and that continued tonight. Actually, a lot of teams have had the Reds’ number this year, so I guess that continued tonight.
Although Reds starter Josh Smith was perfect through four innings, the Cubs weren’t held down after that, scoring seven runs in their next four innings.
Cubs starter Jake Buchanan, who has mostly been a solid if unspectacular starter at AAA Iowa this year, threw five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk, and striking out three. If the Cubs decide to keep him on the 40-man roster this offseason, he could be a nice depth arm at Iowa to open 2017 (though he’ll be out of minor league options, so getting him there will be tricky … though we’ll get there when we get there).
The bullpen was basically solid from there, though Joey Votto got in his obligatory late-inning homer. The game was well out of reach by then.
