Chicago Cubs 2016 NL Central Championship Gear

great american ballpark

The Chicago Cubs have just three games left this season, but because they tied in their last game (no, seriously) the most they can win is a measly 104 games.

But that will require a sweep of the Reds … a team that the Cubs have handled pretty well this season.

Tonight’s game was supposed to be started by Jason Hammel, but he was scratched with some right elbow soreness (read more about it here), so the Cubs will go with right Jake Buchanan.

Buchanan, 27, has pitched just one inning at the Major League level this season, but has made over 20 starts for Triple-A Iowa. During that stretch, the results weren’t great (4.34 ERA), but the peripherals were a tad better (3.79 FIP). He doesn’t walk many batters (6.3% BB-rate), but he doesn’t really strike them out either (17.3%). Hopefully he can give the Cubs 5-6 useful innings and keep them in the game.

Opposing General Buchanan and the Cubs is fellow right-hander Josh Smith. Smith has appeared primarily out of the Reds bullpen this season, but has made one start earlier in the year (coincidentally against the Cubs about two weeks ago). In that start, Smith lasted just three innings, but only gave up one earned run on three hits and two walks. Let’s see if the Cubs can get him out early once again.

First pitch is at 6:05 CT.
