Here it is: the roster of 25 guys who can play in the NLDS, which starts tonight at Wrigley Field against the Giants.

The Cubs opted to go with four starting pitchers, seven relievers, and fourteen position players, as we’d expected they would.

Matt Szczur and Jason Hammel are the odd men out (among others) with the roster crunch, as the Cubs choose instead to go with Tommy La Stella and Albert Almora Jr. at the end of the bench. La Stella brings the high-contact left bat, Almora brings the elite, impact late-game defense. I feel bad for Szczur, whose been a valuable bench player all year, but I think this is the right setup for the Cubs.

Jorge Soler is apparently healthy enough to give it a go, which is good news. We’ll see how often he starts, though, given that Kris Bryant could slide out to left field when Javy Baez plays third base (to maximize defense), and given that Chris Coghlan has been swinging a mighty hot bat.
