For a team that was heralded all year, accurately, as one of the best defensive teams of all time, the Cubs seemingly hadn’t been flashing the leather lately. It wasn’t that they were bad necessarily (though there had been plenty of mistakes in this series), it’s just that we had become so used to seeing the Cubs flying all over the place making incredible plays on the regular.



Last night, they got a bit of that magic back with a slew of great plays in the field. Among the ones the Cubs show in this video – the bobble pop-up catch, Kris Bryant diving, Jason Heyward climbing the wall and readjusting, and David Ross and Javy Baez combining on a very slick caught stealing:

There were some other nice plays, including several great digs at first base by Anthony Rizzo, a diving play by Rizzo that did not result in an out (Aroldis Chapman did not immediately run over to cover the bag), a nice catch going over the bullpen mound by Ben Zobrist, and probably several more.

On a night when the pitching was the story, it’s worth pointing out that the defense also played a major role.
