This weekend, the Chicago Cubs surprisingly declined their 2017 club option on pitcher Jason Hammel, despite a need for depth and a weak free agent market. Turns out, it was an understandable, and very classy move by the organization.
Hammel returned the class today, taking out a full page ad in the Chicago Tribune to thank Cubs fans and the Cubs organization:

The messages in there are all fantastic, but I especially appreciated the embedded nod to the front office in this line: “We understand the business side of the game can sometimes force tough decisions, and we thank you for handling it with professionalism and integrity.”
Don’t think that other players don’t become aware of that kind of thing. Well done, Cubs. Well done, Hammel.
Here’s hoping he makes a bundle in free agency.
