Chicago Cubs Lineup: Szczur and La Stella Get Starts

Cubs Lineups

The Cubs head out to play the Rockies today with Kyle Hendricks on the mound, and at the dish – we’re fully in the phase of Spring Training where Cubs pitchers are getting their brief reps in at the plate.

Here’s today’s Cubs lineup:

  1. Kyle Schwarber, LF
  2. Albert Almora Jr., CF
  3. Miguel Montero, C
  4. Matt Szczur, RF
  5. Tommy La Stella, 3B
  6. Ian Happ, 2B
  7. Jeimer Candelario, 1B
  8. Munenori Kawasaki, SS
  9. Kyle Hendricks, P

Hendricks bats ninth in this one, a day after the starting pitcher (Mike Montgomery) batting eighth. I wouldn’t take too much away from that, though, given that so many regulars are sitting, and the structure of the lineup in the spring factors in a number of things that won’t be relevant on Opening Day.

Matt Szczur and Tommy La Stella may well be battling for the final bench spot on the big league team, and each draws a start in the middle of today’s lineup. Interestingly, if either or both of those guys were injured before the start of the regular season, it may well be one of today’s other starters – Munenori Kawasaki – who got the call as the 25th man, given his defensive value, versatility, base-running ability, and clubhouse impact. As it stands today, though, Kawasaki figures to head to AAA Iowa to begin the season, and then join the big league team if/when needed throughout the year.

Otherwise, today’s lineup is Kyle Schwarber plus big league reserves and prospects.

As usual, we’ll have a full Pre-Gamin’ for you closer to game time.
