Today, the Chicago Cubs topped the Houston Astros 6-3 in an exhibition game – so not even a true Spring Training Cactus League game – and declared themselves ready to defend the title, starting Sunday Night in St. Louis.
Yes, please. Bring on the regular season.
Kyle Hendricks tuned up with five near-perfect innings of work, and he was followed by a near approximation of the AAA Iowa bullpen, which pitched reasonably well.
The Cubs scored their six runs on eight hits, all singles, and five walks. Jon Jay had the only multi-hit game for the Cubs, and also did this:

Outside of that, there really wasn’t too much in this one to get the blood going.
Or maybe it’s simply because, as I said, this was the final fake game before the regular season kicks off. And boy am I itchy to get it going. Viewed in that light, if a random fan has trouble focusing on the fake game because of the real ones that loom, I can only imagine how it is for the players when they get this deep into the spring. It’s time for real games.
