UPDATE: Postponed. Blergh.
The Chicago Cubs try to take the series from the St. Louis Cardinals to open up the 2017 season, and they’ll have a couple new entrants to the lineup to help them do it.
Here’s the third Cubs lineup of the year:
- Kyle Schwarber, LF
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Ben Zobrist, 2B
- Addison Russell, SS
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Miguel Montero, C
- John Lackey, P
- Jon Jay, CF
So there’s a bit of your explanation on why Willson Contreras caught Jake Arrieta last night instead of Miguel Montero. With a day game after a night game, and an off-day tomorrow, I’m guessing Joe Maddon simply wanted to ensure that Contreras would get two days off in a row (as he often likes to do with players).
Moreover, this approach allowed the Cubs to send out Montero, a lefty, to face Lance Lynn, who has an enormous splits: .279 career wOBA against righties, .341(!) against lefties. Lynn, by the way, is returning from Tommy John surgery.
With all that in mind, the Cubs also see lefty Jon Jay make his season debut, giving them six lefty bats in the lineup. Not too shabby.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (12:45 CT). I’ll also nudge you in the direction of the morning Bullets, since they came out just before the lineup …
