Pre-Gamin’: Cardinals at Cubs (6:35 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

Pre-Gamin'

A series win against the Cardinals! They did it. It’s locked in!

The top three teams in the NL Central – Brewers, Cubs, Cardinals (in that order) – now have the same number of losses overall (27). The Cubs win yesterday put Chicago a half-game up on their rivals in St. Louis, and one game back against the Brewers. There’s not much more we could’ve asked for than a series win this weekend, and given how bad things were going, this feels like winning the lotto. Good times are still ahead.

Hopefully, however, they continue tonight at 6:35.

Kyle Hendricks is taking the mound for the Cubs after a rough(ish) start in San Diego. If you don’t recall, Hendricks allowed five earned runs in his five innings of work that day, but four of those runs came on one swing of the bat from Hunter Renfroe (grand slam to left field). You hate to see a single mistake pitch wind up being that costly, but a belt-high 87 MPH fastball out over the plate probably deserves to be crushed.

With that said, Hendricks struck out five batters and walked zero batters for the second consecutive game. And, in fact, eight of his ten starts featured two or fewer free passes. Hendricks had been on a nice little streak before that blow up in San Diego though, so hopefully he gets right back on track today against the Cardinals.

Michael Wacha’s starting for the Cardinals tonight, but the Cubs have had his number for his entire career: 10 starts, 5.90 ERA. Let’s see if the Cubs can get that ERA to keep rising, eh?
