The Cubs and Brewers are teasing us today.
The NL Central’s first and second place teams are getting together at Wrigley Field, but just for one game (a rained out make-up from earlier this season). Even still, a win would feel pretty big, especially going into the final series of the first half.
Mike Montgomery is taking the mound for the Chicago Cubs and continues to be something of a revelation for the rotation. In fact, he lasted 6.2 innings the last time out (against the Reds), which was the longest start of his season. He did allow four earned runs in that one, but he seemed to pitch a whole lot better than that (7Ks, 2BBs). Overall, the 2017 Montgomery has been very, very good.
Oh, and for what it’s worth, the Brewers have hit lefties (.324 wOBA – 12th in MLB) a bit worse than righties (.332 wOBA – 7th) this season.
The Brewers are sending Zach Davies to the hill today, and he’s had a really rough season overall: 5.03 ERA, 4.98 FIP, 4.66 xFIP. Of course, I’ve said those exact same words for a number of opposing starters lately, so let’s just hope for the best, yes?
His last start against the Marlins was fairly mediocre (6.0 IP, 4ER), but he did dominate the Braves just before that (7.0 IP, 5H, 0ER). Hopefully, the Cubs give them their best today and come away with a win.
One final thought: Davies has been absolutely dreadful against left-handed pitching this season (.374 wOBA), which is why the Cubs loaded the lineup with southpaws, including Kyle Schwarber. And because Kyle Schwarber is going to come back and dominate, starting today, I’ve made the following promise:

Let’s go Cubs. Cut that lite-beer-soaked, first-place lead down.
