After today’s stunning acquisition of Jose Quintana, the Chicago Cubs announced the rotation coming out of the break.
Mike Montgomery, as previously announced, will still start on Friday against the Orioles, and he’ll be followed by Jake Arrieta and then Quintana on Sunday (Sharma).
Jon Lester will start the next game, as the Cubs head to Atlanta, to be followed by John Lackey and then Montgomery again. The implication in that is that Eddie Butler is the one now out of the rotation, which is not a surprise. Whether he’s moved into the bullpen or optioned back to AAA is the only question, and I’d bet on the latter.
Kyle Hendricks will also soon return to the rotation, but he’ll make one more rehab start at AA Tennessee on Monday before coming back.
At that point, assuming the health of the rest of the rotation, the Cubs will have to decide whether to bump Montgomery to the bullpen, or bump Lackey altogether.
