Pre-Gamin’: Cubs at Orioles (6:05 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

Pre-Gamin'

The second half of the season starts today, and I’m feeling pretty good about the Cubs’ chances overall.

After all, they rested up, added a young, cost-controlled starting pitcher in Jose Quintana, got connected to A’s starter Sonny Gray in a rumor earlier today, and are likely heading towards a fair amount of positive offensive regression and rebounding in the second half.

Their first series is a three-game road set against the Baltimore Orioles. Mike Montgomery will take the mound for the Cubs against Orioles righty Kevin Gausman. Still just 26, Gausman was a former top pitching prospect in baseball, who took a big step forward last season (3.61 ERA, 3.0 WAR), but has not found much success here in 2017 (5.85 ERA, 1.0 WAR).

His struggles this season are pretty surface level, as his walk rate has climbed roughly 3.5 percentage points over his 2015 and 2016 marks, while his strikeout rate has plummeted to 18.4%. Each mark is worse than average, and something the Cubs should look to take advantage of this evening.

A win or a loss tonight won’t decide anything this season, but it sure would be nice to kick things off on the right foot. And, hey, dropping to three games below .500 wouldn’t exactly be fun, now, would it?
