After last night’s thumping, the Cubs have a chance to come out of the break with a road sweep. Given all that preceded it, you obviously couldn’t script things better. Well, unless that sweep was aided by the big-time pitching you picked up in trade over that very break.
Here’s the crew that’ll try to help new Cubs lefty Jose Quintana pull it off:
- Ben Zobrist, 2B
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Willson Contreras, C
- Kyle Schwarber, DH
- Ian Happ, CF
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Addison Russell, SS
- Jon Jay, LF
Against righty Ubaldo Jimenez, the Cubs bring back a couple lefties to the lineup, including Kyle Schwarber, whose been raking since his return from AAA Iowa: .278/.350/.722, and a nice 169 wRC+.
Jimenez, who has somehow managed to stay in the Orioles’ rotation despite years of struggles, has posted a 6.67 ERA this year with peripherals that nearly match. He doesn’t strike out a ton of guys, he does walk a ton of guys, and he gives up a ton of homers. In short, Jimenez has been terrible this year, and, in theory, the Cubs should put the wood to him. But you know how that can go.
Oh, and he’ll face six lefties today. Lefties are hitting .279/.379/.662 off of him. Yo.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (12:35 CT).
