The Cubs won the first one against the Diamondbacks last night, and continue a torrid 14-3 start to the second half of the season.
Jake Arrieta takes the ball tonight, and one of the Cubs newest players gets the start behind the plate.
Check it out:
- Ben Zobrist, 2B
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Kyle Schwarber, LF
- Alex Avila, C
- Addison Russell, SS
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Jon Jay, CF
- Jake Arrieta, P
Against the right-handed, former-Cubs-farmhand Zack Godley, the Cubs are loading the lineup with lefties. I count five natural southpaws overall, plus the switch-hitter Ben Zobrist at the top.
And if you’re keeping track at home, yes, that includes the Cubs newest catcher, Alex Avila. I’d love to spit a bunch of numbers at you about how good Avila has been this season and against righties in general, but Luis did a phenomenal job with that in his Getting to Know Avila post earlier today. In short, he kills righties and should be a legitimate weapon here in the second half.
Despite hitting home runs last night, each of Ian Happ and Javy Baez are getting the night off tonight, as the lefty Jon Jay takes over center and Zobrist covers second base. If the Cubs win tonight, it’ll mark their sixth straight series win in the second half.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (7:05 CT).
