Chicago Cubs Lineup: It’s Time to Bounce Back Against a Beatable Lefty

Cubs Lineups

Well, it’s a late one in San Francisco tonight, as the Cubs look to bounce back after back-to-back series losses.

Here’s the lineup that’ll give it a go:

  1. Jon Jay, LF
  2. Kris Bryant, 3B
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Willson Contreras, C
  5. Ben Zobrist, 2B
  6. Albert Almora Jr., CF
  7. Jason Heyward, RF
  8. Javy Baez, SS
  9. Jake Arrieta, P

What? Did you think the top of the order would change, because there’s a lefty on the mound tonight? Well, not only has Jon Jay been brilliant enough to keep in the lineup regardless of the opposing starter’s favorite hand (lately), he’s a noted reverse split guy: 116 wRC+ against lefties, 107 wRC+ against righties.

So, with the lefty Matt Moore on the mound, the Cubs are sticking with Jay.

But you know who’s not a reverse split guy? Albert Almora. The Cubs young right-handed center fielder loves feasting on left-handed pitching and is slashing .338/.427/.521 against southpaws this season. With Almora in center, Jay moves out to left field, which means the somewhat-platooning Kyle Schwarber is on the bench.

In fact, with three straight lefties this weekend, I wonder how much we’ll see of Schwarber at all. My guess is that he starts at least one of these games, though.

Other than that, there’s not to much weirdness going on. Baez is at short, as Addison Russell continues to heal (which works out, because Baez loves facing left-handers too). And Ben Zobrist is at second base, instead of Ian Happ. Pretty straight-forward, all things considered.

So, as usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (9:08 CT).
