Willson Contreras’s Homer Binge Has Set an All-Time Record for Venezuelan Players

Analysis and Commentary, Chicago Cubs Highlights

Although his multi-homer games recently haven’t directly led to Cubs wins, you certainly can’t blame that on Willson Contreras.

The Cubs’ 25-year-old catcher is arguably the single hottest hitter in baseball, and has carried the Cubs offensively lately. How about this:

In his last four games, Contreras has homered five times, including these two yesterday:

Pitcher Erik Fedde’s reactions on both homers say it all. Darn. That ball is very far gone.

With those two homers, Contreras pushed his season total to 21 – one more than Kris Bryant – and achieved a historic milestone for Venezuelan-born big leaguers:

Willson Contreras just passed Miguel Cabrera for an offensive record. Not sure any of us saw that coming a few years ago. (Yes, Contreras is quite a few years older than Cabrera was at that time, and nobody will be predicting a Cabrera-like career at the plate for Contreras, but still. It’s awesome.)

On the year, Contreras has now pushed his WAR total to 3.2, tying him with a couple guys you might know on the Cubs:
