The Cubs can end the Cardinals’ chances at the NL Central tonight while also severely hurting their outside hope for the one remaining Wild Card spot. That’s the sort of schadenfreude everyone outside of St. Louis can get behind, right?
Of course, it won’t be an easy matchup – that much is certain.
Jon Lester is on the mound for the Cubs tonight, and we discussed his struggles against right-handers just before his most recent start and then talked about the lack of command and velocity again right after. In either/both/any case, Lester was quite bad the last time out:
Versus Rays: 4.1IP, 8H, 7ER, 3BB, 0Ks
Something is clearly not working for him, and I am hoping – in the worst way possible – he figures it out before the postseason. With just – at most – two more starts to get right, time is running out.
And then there’s the opposing starter, Luke Weaver.
Weaver is starting for the Cardinals tonight and the rookie right-hander has been nothing short of phenomenal for them since joining the team in July.
With that said, despite the big scary numbers (31.4 K%, 5.3 BB%, .221 AVG, 2.05 ERA), he has shown his mortality lately. In his last start, he went just 5.0 innings against the Reds, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Then again, he walked none and stuck out seven in that one, so … yeah, this isn’t the greatest matchup. Maybe (hopefully), the gravity of the start (staving off elimination) will get to him … or something.
Game time is 7:15 CT. Let’s go, Cubs.
