All 30 teams will be wearing Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School baseball caps before – and some during – their Spring Training games on Friday to honor and support the victims of the shooting there (MLB.com). Players will then be signing the caps and auctioning them to raise money for the Broward Education Foundation, which benefits the Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund.
The shooting touched everyone across the country, including in Major League Baseball, but few more than Anthony Rizzo, who attended Stoneman Douglas. He returned there to speak at a vigil last week, and his words will stick with us. Hopefully the message of another tragic loss of life will stick with us as well, and actual, tangible steps can be taken to make us all – especially our children – safer.
Good on MLB for quickly rallying on this to make such a visible reminder and show of support possible.
