Eddie Butler takes the mound for the Cubs today in their Cactus League home opener, and Jen-Ho Tseng will go tomorrow. The question you no doubt wonder: when do the “regular” starting pitchers make their debuts?
Well, today the Cubs unveiled the plan, with the regular rotation kicking into gear on Monday. Tyler Chatwood will start on Monday, Jon Lester Tuesday, Kyle Hendricks Wednesday, Yu Darvish Thursday, and Jose Quintana Friday (Rogers, Muskat). Mike Montgomery will follow Hendricks on Wednesday (Miles).
Is that a teaser on the regular season ordering? Lester, Hendricks, Darvish, Quintana, Chatwood? It’s certainly possible, given that we suspect Lester may get the opening nod as it is, and the rest of the front four really could go in almost any order, but with the lefties probably split up.
And although Maddon isn’t saying yet, as Gordon Wittenmyer notes, things are lining up that way:
Long way to go, and Maddon steadfastly refuses to say yet, but if Lester pitches every 5th day starting with Tuesday's spring debut, he lines up for 3/29 opener in Miami.
