God’s Wrath Watch: Javy Baez’s Hamstring Still Bothering Him (UPDATE: Had an MRI)

Chicago Cubs News

Javy Baez may have pronounced himself 100 percent after leaving Thursday’s game, but his hamstring was still bothering him as of yesterday, and he won’t be playing in a game today.

Although Baez thought the tug in his hamstring was just a cramp, the product of dehydration, hearing Joe Maddon put it this way to Cubs.com is enough to reignite the nervousness you were feeling a couple days ago: “It’s still there, it’s still bothering him a bit. We’re trying to figure out exactly what’s going on.”

I … see. [*screams into pillow like an adult*]

Like we said yesterday, the line between a cramp and a mild strain, in terms of the feeling for a player, can be very fine. You often don’t really know what’s what until the next day, and, well, this is sub-ideal.

I wouldn’t yet say it’s a big deal, though. We’re still three weeks away from the season, and unless this actually is a strain, that’s plenty of time for Baez to return and get in his work in advance of the season. If it is a mild strain, however – and you start hearing this weekend about Baez heading for an MRI – that can keep a guy out for a month, and he would probably miss the start of the season.

With Ian Happ, Ben Zobrist, and Tommy La Stella in tow, the Cubs are extremely well-covered at second base in that event, but we’ll get there when we get there.

UPDATE: So, Baez did wind up having an MRI, though it did not turn up anything serious by all accounts. Still, he won’t see game action again until sometime next week.
