Ben Zobrist (Back) is Headed to the Disabled List

Chicago Cubs News

Ben Zobrist’s back soreness is going to put him on the disabled list (ESPN), which is a particular bummer given the blistering hot start he’s had to the season.

The good news, as we discussed yesterday, is that Zobrist already hasn’t played in a week, so he would need to spend, at minimum, just four more days on the DL. That would leave him eligible – if he’s feeling all right – to come off the DL on April 25, the Cubs’ second game in Cleveland next week.

In Zobrist’s place, you can assume the Cubs will bring up a bat from AAA Iowa. It wouldn’t necessarily have to be another versatile type, as the Cubs still have quite a bit of coverage all over. So if, for example, the Cubs wanted to bring first baseman Efren Navarro back up as a bat off the bench, they could do that. I tend to think, however, that guys like David Bote, Ryan Court, Mike Freeman, and Mark Zagunis are more likely. Bote, who is already on the 40-man roster, leads the Iowa Cubs with three homers. Zagunis, who is also on the 40-man, leads with an .837 OPS.
