Series Preview: Giants at Cubs, May 25 – May 27, 2018

Series Previews

The Cubs are hosting the Giants this weekend, and, doggonit, I have a good feeling about it.

With an off-day Monday followed by two home games and another off-day yesterday, these guys have slept in their own beds for four straight nights (at least) and have played just two games during that stretch. Rest should not be an issue.

The Cubs also have Kyle Hendricks going today, whom I may just believe in the most at this point of the year, followed by Yu Darvish and Jose Quintana, who both delivered solid starts their last time out. I’m not saying they’ll sweep, but at home with those three guys on this much rest? Give me the Cubs in two of three.

We’re Going Streaking

The Chicago Cubs (25-21) have not been able to escape the 6-game gravitational pull of .500 yet this season, but a sweep of the Giants would do it. A sweep by the Giants, on the other hand, well, let’s just not think about that, eh?

The San Francisco Giants (24-26) just dropped back-to-back games against the Astros after splitting a four-gamer with the Rockies. They’re two games below .500, but just 2.0 games out of first in the currently-dreadful NL West. Must be nice.

Keep an Eye Out For …

Cubs Pitcher: Yu Darvish. Although his walk rate has spiked this season, his strikeout rate over his last four starts has been between 29.2% and 33.3%, which is phenomenal. Opposing batters have also hit just .197 off him during that stretch, despite a .250 BABIP, and his walk rate has dropped down to 11.4%. We’ll also be on the lookout to see if he continues pounding four-seamers up at the top of the zone, the way he did frequently and successfully against the Reds last weekend.

Cubs Player: Since his four-hit day against the Reds last weekend, Addison Russell has gone 1-16 with a single, two walks, and eight strikeouts. He was showing some signs of life before that, but this cold streak has hit him hard (though he did have that one big shot on Wednesday that Rajai Davis robbed). Hopefully he can stop it quickly and get back on track.

Giants Pitcher (s): Ty Blach and Derek Holland have some pretty significant lefty/right splits this season, so look for the Cubs to load the lineups with right-handers on Friday and Sunday.

Giants Player: Andrew McCutchen is 4 for his last 30, but three of those hits have gone for extra bases. He’s also struck out 13 times and walked just once during that stretch, so hopefully he remains cold over the weekend.
