Cubs Roster Moves: Gimenez Up, Caratini Sent to Iowa, Navarro DFA’d

Chicago Cubs News, Chicago Cubs Transactions, Cubs Minor Leagues and Prospects

As we discussed earlier today, it was time for the Cubs to make a decision on catcher Chris Gimenez, a veteran back-up who was at AAA Iowa (but with the right to opt out soon if he wasn’t called up), and the decision has been made:

Gimenez, 35, takes Efren Navarro’s spot on the 40-man roster. The 32-year-old first baseman is unlikely to be added to anyone else’s 40-man roster, and may very well remain with the Cubs on a new minor league deal.

And on the 25-man roster, as expected, it’s Victor Caratini heading to AAA Iowa. The 24-year-old switch-hitter will get some more regular reps at Iowa, and return if there’s an injury or in September when rosters expand.

My guess is Gimenez will start as soon as tomorrow, given that Yu Darvish is pitching (they have worked together before, and have had success) and the Cubs are facing a lefty. But he may not be a personal catcher, necessarily. It just lines up tomorrow.
