Report: Chicago Cubs Sign Xavier Nady

Word this morning was that Xavier Nady was the Chicago Cubs’ top choice to serve as fourth outfielder, and according to Tim Brown on Twitter, the Cubs have landed him. No details have yet emerged, but we’ll update as more becomes available. UPDATE: The deal is reportedly (we’re using that word a lot today, no?) worth $3.3 million […]

Report: Ben Sheets Signs with Oakland

According to various reports – including CBS Sports and a multitude of Tweets – the Oakland A’s have ponied up to land free agent starting pitcher Ben Sheets, and will announce the signing later this afternoon. The deal is thought to be for one year and between $8 to 10 million.

In Case You Were Hoping for Melky Cabrera

You can forget it. Reports indicate that today, Melky Cabrera and some other youngsters will be traded to the Atlanta Braves for pitchers Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan. The Braves had been looking for an outfield bat, and needed to move a starting pitcher, but this is an imperfect deal for them. Cabrera is far […]

Obsess No More: Bradley Traded to Mariners

Quick update: the unfortunate trade is now official. Today, the Chicago Cubs traded Milton Bradley to the Seattle Mariners for “pitcher” Carlos Silva and $9 million. Silva makes about $3 million more than Bradley over the next two years, so the Cubs save $6 million total. But they’re stuck with a guy who has been, […]

Oh Crap: Source Indicates Milton Bradley for Carlos Silva is

Hold on to your butts. According to the Seattle Times’ Larry Stone, the Chicago Cubs are planning to send Milton Bradley to the Seattle Mariners today for pitcher Carlos Silva. The money aspect – which will be very telling – has not yet been discussed publicly. We’ll keep you posted as things develop, and should […]

Obsessive Bradley Trade Watch: Rumors of Bradley to Seattle Mariners

File this under “Oh Please Dear Baby Jesus No.” We heard rumors of Milton Bradley heading off to Seattle for “pitcher” Carlos Silva a few weeks ago. Mercifully, those rumors were quickly doused. But now they’re back. With a vengeance. While the Cubs have talked to as many as four teams regarding Bradley, perhaps the […]

Roy Halladay on His Way to the Phillies

According to SI.com, the Blue Jays, Phillies, and Mariners have pulled off a gigantic trade that would see Roy Halladay head to the Phillies, Cliff Lee head to the Mariners, and presumably, you know, something head to the Blue Jays. It’s all a bit amorphous at this point, but being that it could have a […]

Cubs Will Tender Contracts to All the Arbitration Eligible Guys

Today is the deadline for teams to tender contracts to their arbitration eligible players, and the Chicago Cubs intend to do so with all of their guys – the lone exception being injured/crappy reliever Neal Cotts, who may yet return on a minor league deal. This means that Mike Fontenot will get a contract, though […]

Arismendy Mota is a Chicago Cub

Today the Chicago Cubs executed a pre-planned trade for minor league pitcher Arismendy Mota, selected yesterday by the Washington Nationals in the AAA phase of the Rule 5 draft. The Cubs sent “cash considerations,” which is a euphemism for “we agreed that the Nats will draft this kid for us, and then we will send […]

Obsessive Milton Bradley Trade Watch: Cubs “Close” to Deal with Rays

Do you have your gigantic grain of salt handy? Good. Bob Nightengale of USA Today has tweeted that the Chicago Cubs are “close” to dealing Milton Bradley to the Tampa Bay Rays. If true, it is almost certainly for Pat Burrell, with the Cubs greasing the wheels with some cash. If this is the trade, […]

Obsessive Bradley Trade Watch: No Mystery Team?

There are now conflicting reports on whether there is, in fact, a mystery American League team close to landing Milton Bradley from the Chicago Cubs. Gordon Wittenmyer and Paul Sullivan suggest there is such a team, while Carrie Muskat says there isn’t. For my part, I side with Wittenmyer and Sullivan on this one, if […]

OMGranderson Watch: Time of Death, 2:30pm EST

Various reports indicate that the mega-blockbuster (but hoping it wouldn’t happen) three-way trade between the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Detroit Tigers, which will see the Yankees wind up with Granderson and the D-backs land Jackson, is about to go down. If it is any consolation (it’s not), the Cubs may now pursue a […]

OMGranderson: Cubs Out of It for Curtis Granderson?

File this one under please-be-untrue: Today’s reports indicate that the Detroit Tigers have demanded that they receive a studly, ready-to-go center field prospect in any deal they would make for Curtis Granderson. If that is true, and the Tigers hold firm to that demand, you can probably count the Chicago Cubs out. The closest thing […]

Obsessive Bradley Trade Watch: Bradley to the Royals for Gil Meche?

These things are flying fast and loose. Last night, per Bruce Levine, Cubs officials met with the Kansas City Royals about a potential Milton Bradley/Gil Meche swap. You’ll recall: (1) the Royals had expressed interest in signing Bradley some moons ago, and (2) the exact same sentence, but swap “Cubs” for “Royals,” and “Meche” for […]

Obsessive Bradley Trade Watch: Mini Update

Joel Sherman of the New York Post has tweeted that, if the Cubs are able to swing a Milton Bradley / Pat Burrell swap, the Mets are interested in a Burrell / Luis Castillo swap. This is, of course, an iteration of the three-way deal that has been discussed at length for weeks, but this […]

Friday Notes: Zambrano, Brenly, Riggleman

Editor’s Note: Apologies for the light, late, and (kind of) lame posting today. Massive server issues have had the site down all morning. A few items to keep you afloat this Friday, in the absence of any real rumor movement: Carlos Zambrano won the NL Silver Slugger at pitcher for the third time. And apparently […]

Mark Teahen to Chicago White Sox

Don’t you hate when people do those misleading headlines? I can’t freaking stand it. So I refuse, even though this was a prime opportunity, given the Chicago Cubs previous involvement in Mark Teahen rumors. I could have said: “Mark Teahen is Coming to Chicago!” And then pulled a switcharoo in the body. Nope. Not going […]

Screeching Tire Sound: Cubs WILL Shop Carlos Zambrano This Winter

When Bruce Levine suggested yesterday that the Chicago Cubs might look to trade ace Carlos Zambrano this winter, most pundits gave it short shrift (including yours truly). After all, without Zambrano (and likely-to-depart Rich Harden), the Cubs rotation could look scary. But now sources say that the Cubs are going to consider trading Zambrano. Despite […]

Thomas Diamond is a Chicago Cub

Today the Cubs claimed a player off waivers! But, he’s a 26 year old former top prospect who’s struggled to do much of anything outside of the operating room in the past few years. As Rotoworld says: He had been designated for assignment earlier this week. Diamond, the former top pitching prospect, is now 26 […]
