Joey Votto has long been one of my favorite, non-Cub players of all time. Despite playing for an immediate, divisional rival, it’s hard not to respect his talent. He’s a sabermetric darling, in addition to being a traditional slugger. He runs hard, plays hard and is just plain good. As it turns out, he can be unintentionally hilarious. as well.
Check out this video where Votto is squaring up against notoriously fast-paced pitcher Derek Lowe. Instead of playing Lowe’s game and becoming off-balance, Votto stays in the box for the entire at bat. No really, he never steps out.
It’s hard to explain why this is so funny, but it is. Votto hardly moves an inch, takes six pitches, draws the walk and hustles down to first. This takes guts, and Joey Votto’s got them.
Now, as for why he decided to do this … the world may never know.
