One of my favorite random, “lesson” plays from the 2015 season.
Setting things up: the Royals were staging a rally to come back late on the Rays when Kendrys Morales grounded one to first base. He thought it was foul, but the fact that it wasn’t caused a problem not only for Ben Zobrist, who was running home, but also for Morales, who found himself a little embarrassed:
Heads up play there by Rays catcher Rene Rivera, who played through the whistle, so to speak.
In Morales’ defense, you can kinda sorta see that maybe the ball was foul – it was definitely going to BE foul if James Loney hadn’t come forward from first base – but you still gotta just run, man. Otherwise, stuff like that happens.
