If you ever played little league baseball, or even just put on a baseball mitt in your backyard, there’s a really good chance that you pretended to make the following play. You know which one, the classic “Derek Jeter deep short jump-throw to first base.”
Plenty of shortstops try to make it, but end up bouncing the ball in far too late to come even remotely close to nailing the runner.
But plenty of shortstops aren’t Andrelton Simmons. What he does here is one of the better throws you’ll ever see:
Not only did he field it cleanly – in shallow left field, no doubt – but he turned, jumped and made an excellent, strong and accurate throw to first base in time to nail the runner. Incredible play. Dare I say … even better than Jeter’s version?
