Although the Cardinals ultimately lost the game, there was a really fantastic play in the field by outfielder Stephen Piscotty and catcher Yadier Molina that I simply think is worth watching and appreciating:
Statcast, which allows teams and fans to track and quantify some of the action on the field in ways we couldn’t before, is really great, but I don’t think we needed it on this one to see just how impressive the play was.
On a hit to right that didn’t get up on him very quickly, and with Andrew McCutchen running the bases, Piscotty’s transfer had to be clean, his throw had to be strong, and his throw had to be accurate to even have a chance there. Then, look at when the ball arrives – it still looks like McCutchen will be safe. But Yadier Molina was so perfectly positioned and received the throw so well that he can swipe in time to get the out.
Nothing too fancy about this play. It’s just really good execution.
