Although 2016 has been somewhat of an exception, Russell Martin has long been known for his defensive prowess behind the plate. For the most part, he’s been an above average pitch framer and game-caller, with an arm capable of throwing out his fair share of base stealers, too. But like I said, the defensive metrics have been mostly down on him in 2016.
Only, you wouldn’t know it from the beautiful play he made over the railing of the visitors’ dugout last night against the Astros:
Acrobatic is really the only word to describe that play. Being in a position to even make that catch would have been impressive enough, but his ability to dive over the railing, roll off, and land on his feet is nothing short of graceful. It was truly a spectacular play.
