Ahh … Hunter Pence: one of baseball’s greatest remaining mysteries.
On Monday night, the San Francisco Giants hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a three-game set at AT&T Park. And, if you’re unfamiliar with AT&T Park, it has an increasingly rare peculiarity (seen only at a few ball parks, now): the bullpens are actually located on the field.
While exterior bullpens like these provide a nice visual for the fans, the do tend to get in the way, from time to time, preventing most outfielders from making a play they otherwise would have. But Hunter Pence is not most outfielders. He is Hunter Pence, and Hunter Pence can make catches even after falling down:
Okay, so all hilarity aside, that was a pretty impressive catch. Even after stumbling over the bullpen, Pence sticks with that ball and makes a pretty smooth catch on his back. Given the game situation – one run game, two outs, two men in scoring position – that was actually pretty huge.
But he still eats pizza with a fork and knife.
