Yesterday, Josh Donaldson stepped up to the plate five times against the Minnesota Twins. He walked in one of those appearances and flew out to center in the other, but with the remaining three at-bats, Donaldson crushed three home runs in three chances.
Check it out:
According to Statcast, Donaldson’s first homer (his 31st of the season) was launched at 106 MPH covering 399 feet out to left field. The second (his 32nd) left his bat with an exit velocity of 104 MPH and traveled a similar 397 feet, this time out to center field. Finally, in the bottom of the eighth inning, Donaldson stepped up to the plate for the last time of the game and cranked a 110 MPH liner out to deep right center field (his 33rd) for a 417 foot blast.
The three homer performance was the first of Donaldson’s career and brought his season slash line up from an already impressive .290/.403/.557 (.405 wOBA) to an even better .294/.407/.578 (.413 wOBA)Â – that is not easy to do in one night this late into the season.
But perhaps the most impressive (and fun) part of the entire evening is how the hometown fans reacted after Donaldson hit his third homer. Acting like they were at a hockey game (those darn Canadians), the Toronto fans tossed their hats onto the field in celebration of Donaldson’s hat trick.
