A Smirking Jay Bruce Robs Kyle Schwarber of a Homer in Right

Incredible Plays

Last night, the Chicago Cubs trampled the New York Mets by a final score of 14-3, and did so on the strength of a five homer night:

Anthony Rizzo – Leadoff Homer (14)*
Ian Happ – Grand Slam (6)
Jason Heyward – Two-run Shot (6)
Kris Bryant – Solo Shot (15)
Javy Baez – Solo Shot (10)

*Yeah, that Anthony Rizzo was leading off. The Cubs are … going through some stuff.

But just before Javy Baez added his 10th homer of the season in the top of the ninth inning, Kyle Schwarber sent one out deep to right field in the top of the eighth. And if it weren’t for Jay Bruce’s slick play and perfectly timed leap, the Cubs might’ve hit six homers last night:

That ball was definitely headed over the fence, but Bruce reeled it back in. To be fair, he didn’t (or couldn’t?) jump all that high to grab it, but hey, a home run robbery is a home run robbery.

Even Bruce can’t resist cracking a smirk after that fantastic play:
