According to Baseball Reference, Rangers pitcher (and baseball’s resident bad boy) Bartolo Colon measures in at 5 feet 11 inches and 285 pounds.
And, sure, some would say that he’s out of shape, but given that he’s also a 44-year-old starting pitcher in the Major Leagues – the oldest player in the game, in fact – I think we can cut him a break. Plus, Colon currently has a sub-3.00 ERA through seven starts and two relief appearances this season, so, yeah, whatever he’s doing is working.
And, hey, sometimes the extra cushion comes in handy. Like last night, when Colon took a come-backer directly off his belly, fielded the ball, and made still the out at first. Seriously. That seriously happened.
