Returning From Hiatus

BearWaveHello, and welcome back to Bleacher Nation’s Bears coverage.

Before things get started up again, I think it’s important to go over a few of the reasons behind the hiatus. It’s not something that was planned, and it’s certainly not something that I want to have happen again. The connection with readers is what drives Bleacher Nation, and I take that very seriously.

So it makes sense for me to pull back the curtain a bit; it’d be ridiculous for me to pop up on a Monday morning and act like it’s business as usual.

The site went on hiatus in mid-February; at that point, I’d been doing it since the beginning of December. I’d covered a pseudo-quarterback controversy, a wild playoff chase, and a crushingly disappointing end to the season. The site was growing, I was proud of the content, and I really enjoyed getting to know readers.

Sounds great, right? And it was. Except for that BN Bears is just a portion of my life, and I didn’t do a very good job of incorporating it into the rest of my life in a healthy way. I was trying to do too much, too soon.

It wasn’t sustainable, and something had to change. Sadly, when I evaluated where I was with my work-life balance (and even with my work-work balance), I felt the only thing to do was to step back from the site.

Having taken time away from it, and having discussed all of this with Brett, we think there are some ways that I can make it fit more realistically into my life. Out of necessity, it means less time committed to writing, and I certainly won’t be able to emulate what Brett does, which was my (foolish in retrospect) goal at the start.

But looking at it as a long-term venture, this is the only way that I can eventually make that happen.

Thanks to those of you who have asked about the site, and thanks for reading today. I’m looking forward to getting started again.

Jay Rigdon is the editor and lead writer at Bleacher Nation Bears, and can also be found @BearsBN on Twitter.

Welcome back, I know I was never really commenting on here (I’m just not that big a football guy… I made the choice years ago to only commit my fandom to baseball so I’m really just a spectator with football) but I have been reading. As for writing and keeping you life and other professional life in balance its extremely difficult. I recently started to discuss news and issues related to my stuggles with multiple sclerosis and if I wasn’t on disability I doubt I could consistently write on a daily basis. Hope you can find the necessary balance in your life and continue doing the writing you’ve done. I’ve found writing to be one of the best things a person can do with their mind.

    Nice to see you back.

Welcome back, Jay. To echo some of the other comments, the life/work balance issue is a difficult one–as they say though, no one ever looked back at his life and said “I wish I spent more time at the office.” But I’m glad to see this going again.

I hear that a lot, about not wishing you’d spent more time at the office, but I’m at a point in my life where I look back and sure do a lot of wishing that I’d worked harder earlier, so I wouldn’t have to work as hard now!

You know, Cyranojoe–that makes good sense too. But working in the non-profit arena for as long as I have, I’m pretty much resigned to never being able to retire, so I guess for me it just doesn’t make an awful lot of difference . . .
