2014 Round 1 Live Thread (Update: Bears take CB Kyle Fuller)

The long wait is finally over! Here’s our coverage of the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

I’m currently at a function for my day job, but I should be camped in front of a TV and ready to go by 8 P.M. (Truly, the American Dream.)

Feel free to discuss proceedings in the comments, and I’ll be updating this post with Bear-centric pieces of news.

The pick is in, and it’s Kyle Fuller, a cornerback from Virginia Tech. Obviously the Bears are thin in the secondary, and its possible that Fuller moves to safety. If that is what Phil Emery has in mind, that would mean the Bears took Fuller over the top safety prospects.

But Fuller is highly rated, and it will be interesting to see how he fits on the roster for 2014. More analysis to come.

Does anyone think Aaron Donald will be there at #14?

  2. King Jeff

No, I think he’s gone by 14, he’s the top rated tackle in the draft. I’m kind of hoping for a trade down to get extra picks and then get a guy like Louis Nix later in the first. I also wouldn’t mind seeing them get Clinton-Dix, not so big on Pryor.

  3. abe

I have a feeling the bears want to trade down.

  4. cubbiekoolaid2015

Here we go. Let the fun begin!

  5. cubbiekoolaid2015

Good job Texans. JJ Watt and Jadeveon Clowney may be the top pass rushing duo right now. Yes, even without Clowney seeing a NFL snap.

  6. cubbiekoolaid2015

Great pick for the Rams. Really smart not to reach for Watkins and to try and beef up in front of a brittle Sam Bradford. I think they could of traded back for a Matthews or Lewan and picked up an extra pick or two but still a great pick.

    1. roz

Rams are having themselves a draft with Robinson and Donald.

      1. cubbiekoolaid2015

They hit a home run today and they needed to playing in the NFC West. That division isn’t even fair.

  7. cubbiekoolaid2015

Wow. I think I would of gone upside with Manziel but Bortles is the prototypical QB. Nice pick Jags. I hope to see a competitive team down in Florida sometime in the near future.

  8. cubbiekoolaid2015

Awesome trade for the Bills! Love it. I don’t see the Bills making a huge leap next year so that 1st round pick next year could be a huge asset… And the Bills take Watkins. Good job getting Manuel some much needed help. Who else is ecstatic that Watkins and Calvin won’t be teaming up in Detroit?!

    1. cubbiekoolaid2015

      **Awesome trade for the Browns**

  9. cubbiekoolaid2015

I’m thinking Mack to the Raiders here…. Or Johnny Football???

  10. cubbiekoolaid2015

Raiders fans should be doing back flips right now. Mack reminds me of Clay Matthews. Great value and great pick!

  11. cubbiekoolaid2015

Some may not like it but I think the Browns just selected a Patrick Peterson light. May not be the best of value but I think it’s a fair pick.

  12. cubbiekoolaid2015

I almost hope the Vikings take Donald here passing on Manziel so we won’t have to see him twice a year.

  13. cubbiekoolaid2015

Wow… That’s big for the Bears. I don’t believe Barr was being considered by Phil and the FO so I’m thinking at least 5 of those 6 players Phil was talking about are still on the board.

  14. cubbiekoolaid2015

Well Ebron and Calvin may be just as scary… These NFC North offenses are scary.

  15. King Jeff

It’s looking like things are falling perfectly for the Bears. 14 is looking like a really nice trade chip, if they don’t like Dix, Donald, Pryor, or whoever else at that spot.

  16. cubbiekoolaid2015

Read on twitter that Kyle Fuller is the pick. Not happy. This kid better be able to play safety the first year and not sitting on the bench. 1st rounders are not meant to sit on the bench.

    1. King Jeff

That stinks, would have loved Clinton-Dix on the backside. I don’t like drafting college corners and moving them to safety.

  17. Greenroom

Damn, we are loving it. Minus Donald, we got the pick of the pack on DEF. Jay, what are you thinking? anyone? I say Pryor or Dix. peace~

  18. Greenroom

Fuller is —> Brandon Flowers…he is going to bring it. I think it is still going to be Pryor or Dix..the kid from Michigan.

  19. Greenroom

I went to VaTech and I watch all of there games. Fuller is a player. We will not be disappointed! trust me, fellas

    1. cubbiekoolaid2015

      You better be right! 😀

Anyone think the Bears may have a plan to play Peanut at safety and Jennings and Fuller at corner? I think Tillman could be even more valuable as a safety at this point in his career. We’ll have to wait and see.

      1. Greenroom

This is exactly what I was thinking. Tillman will be the man at safety. 🙂

      2. frank

That would be a great plan–but Tillman has said more than once that he will not play safety. Too hard on the body physically, at his age and with the injuries of last year. Of course, Tillman’s a team guy, so if they asked him, I think he’ll do it.

        1. Greenroom

Yeah, I read that about Tillman. But I think, as you said, Tillman is a team player. time will tell. We still need more DEF. ugh

  20. frank

I don’t know. Strikes me as a pick for a year down the road, unless they switch him to safety for the first year. In my opinion, the #14 pick should come in and start–and Fuller will not, at least at corner.

    1. Greenroom

Fuller will get beat like all rookies. But he can start. if not CB, definitely safety. book it.

      1. frank

I think, if they move him to safety for the first year, then it’s probably a very good pick. Much depends on what happens in round two now–a DT, and Fuller’s probably at safety. Another safety, or corner who can be converted to safety, and he may spend a year as a special teams guy, and maybe the nickel back and rotational corner his first year.

        1. mdavis

i think this moves Fuller to the nickel spot. He’ll be on the field. Frey maybe gets a look at safety, otherwise is depth. But Fuller will play. I would have prefered Dennard, but Fuller has good size, speed, and lays some wood. The pick is growing on me.

    2. aa.

Even if they want him to start this year, it can be as the nickel.

  21. Alan Griffin

Which QB do the Browns take with pick 26? They look to all be there.

    1. Alan Griffin

I’m hoping they take Manziel and he lights it up.

  22. Jon

Please of all things holy, keep him at corner

  23. ssckelley

Browns traded for Eagles pick…..Johnny Football finally off the board?

  24. cubbiekoolaid2015

I can’t stop shaking my head at this Fuller pick. Not because I think Fuller will be a bust but because I feel for the third straight year, we could of traded back for our pick. I just don’t think Emery has a real grasp at what other teams are doing.

    1. aa.

Maybe. I saw a lot of mocks that had the Steelers taking Fuller at 15, so maybe not.

    2. frank

Many analysts said that Fuller was, on the whole, the best corner in the draft. He probably wouldn’t have lasted til the Bears pick in round two. I just would’ve liked to have seen them pick someone who’ll be a full time contributor right away. But if he can become the starting nickel back and play on ST, then at least he’ll be a pretty significant contributor.

  25. cubbiekoolaid2015

Bucannon and Easley off the board… Hageman slipping. I really hope the Bears can nab him if he falls far enough.

    1. cubbiekoolaid2015

And now Jimmy Ward is gone. That’s 4 safeties in the first round. The Bears have a HUGE need at safety and neglect it… I guess it’s just a coincidence that the last time the Bears made a Super Bowl they had a top safety in Mike Brown.

      1. frank

I agree that safety is a big need, but I never thought Ward was a first round talent at all–probably 3rd rounder. They liked Bucannon–they’re probably looking at a corner they can convert to safety at this point.

        1. mdavis

McGill. Desir. Couple names to watch in 2-3 range for guys that could move to safety.

    2. frank

Hageman scares me–but he’s a better value in the second round than in the first. He can be a real monster–or a bust.

    3. frank

Would’ve liked to have seen them get Easley though.

      1. cubbiekoolaid2015

Same… Interesting that Louis Nix fell to the second round. Could be a target for the Bears tomorrow.

      2. mdavis

that shcoks me he went round 1….still plenty of talent on the dline though. Sutton. Hageman. Reid. Urban. Nix. Tuitt. Qaurles.

        1. frank

I didn’t think he’d go round one either. I feel better about Hageman and Nix in the second, but they still concern me. Quarles is interesting. Tuitt plays DE doesn’t he?

McGill or Desir would be good picks, though I’m thinking it’ll be a DT in round 2. I think it’s a fair bet that Fuller beats Hayden and Fry for the starting nickel spot–at least I’ll bet that’s what they’re expecting.

          1. mdavis

yeah it sounds like Fuller is going to be the nickel guy. So he’ll contribute heavily, as they’re in that 60-65% of the time.

From what I was reading from JD, don’t be surprised if they go DB/LB tonight. With the safety market just about dry (Joyner from FSU prob top left), Desir or McGill could be targets. Borland could be a target. I think Tuitt is more of a 3-4 DE. But there wasn’t a big run on DTs. There’s some depth there so I think they can still get a qulity prospect in 2-3-4 range.

  26. cubbiekoolaid2015

After watching some tape on Fuller I think he’s gonna be a key piece in beating teams like the Packers and Lions. He’ll be able to line up one on one with guys like Cobb, Tate, and G.Jennings in the slot and hopefully take them out of the game. The more and more I see of Fuller the more and more I like this pick. I can definitely see how some people had him as their #1 corner… Now let’s get a DT in the second round(good value their) and a safety in the 3rd AND 4th round and I think I’ll be a happy camper.

    1. frank

I haven’t seen enough of him to say, but if he can contribute significantly right off the bat, I’ll be happy.

  27. cubbiekoolaid2015

Maybe I’m seeing things through my Bears goggles but this Fuller kid has some Charles Woodson in him.

  28. cubbiekoolaid2015

I didn’t even notice Timmy Jernigan also fell to the second round… I would trade up in the second for him. Bears were horrible against the run last year and he would fill a glaring whole on the line. I’m thinking Jernigan, Hageman, Nix or Sutton in the 2nd round. All 4 of those guys would give you great value and fill a big need… If we don’t go DT, I’d like to see SJB be the pick.(move him to safety) It should be an interesting day two.

    1. mdavis

I agree Jerningan gives good value in 2. But I’m not sure they need to move up. Nix, Jernigan, Sutton, Reid, Urban, Quarles, Hageman, Jones (PSU), so there is a lot of depth there, assuming they like those guys. I’ve been a fan of Reid and Urban myself in round 3, but we’ll see. Really wouldn’t be surprised with Desir in 2 to be moved to S. Or like I said, McGill, whos 6’3″ 220, and while he’s listed at corner, played most of his college career as a safety. so it wouldnt be that big of a transition. I think SJB will be gone before the bears pick.

      1. mdavis

and i repeated this (desir/mcgill) 3x haha. sorry guys, forgot what i wrote last night.

    2. frank

I wouldn’t mind seeing McGill or SJB in the 2nd, and moving either to safety. Then they would’ve upgraded at safety and nickel for this season, while having a corner for the future. Then if Reid or Urban are there in three, go DT–at this point, they’ll be looking for a rotational player. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see them take Nix or Hageman, if they’re available. Although Jernigan’s a better value in round 2, he may not be available–plus, I don’t think that he’s as athletic a player as Emery likes.

      1. mdavis

yeah i think i would like that approach. for whatevers its worth, scouts, inc on espn had a 2nd rock mock, bears taking Jernigan.

      2. Coop

Isn’t Nix more of a 3-4 NT? Maybe he is just a space eater that scheme doesn’t matter, but I thought he has generally been considered better suited to a 3-4.

        1. mdavis

i agree. i suppose he could play the over tackle spot, move ratliff to a 3 tech, which hes capable of. but im with you, i think there ar ebetter fits.
