Mitch Trubisky remains day-to-day with an injured throwing shoulder that already kept him out of last week’s win against the Detroit Lions and could threaten to make him inactive for a second consecutive week.
Indeed, Chicago Bears Head Coach Matt Nagy met with the media on Wednesday at Halas Hall and told reporters that his young quarterback wasn’t expected to practice today. And with that, we have to acknowledge that Trubisky’s status could be up-in-the-air all the way until Sunday’s game, though Nagy cautioned that things could change if Trubisky starts feeling better this week.
With that said, the total picture makes me believe we could be in store for another episode of the Chase Daniel experience in Week 13 against the New York Giants. Because if Trubisky isn’t practicing today, it’s tough to imagine the Bears going against their M.O. (thoughtfully slow returns from injury) to rush him back into the lineup.
Fortunately, Daniel played well in Trubisky’s absence last week, completing 27 of 37 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Indeed, the Bears’ QB2 really picked up steam after a slow start and they didn’t even have to limit their playbook with him under center. Obviously, you could see where Trubisky’s superb athleticism and mobility was a missing component in the offense, but Daniel was a mostly fine replacement. Perhaps we’ll have to hope he can be fine again this weekend.
On the bright side, Nagy shared one bit of good news on the injury front. Tight end Adam Shaheen and outside linebacker Aaron Lynch are expected to practice today. Both players missed the Thanksgiving win against the Lions due to concussions suffered in the team’s Week 11 win on Sunday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings.
Lynch has been a solid rotational pass rusher in Vic Fangio’s scheme, while Shaheen caught a two-point conversion pass in his first game back from a lengthy stint on injured reserve. So while Trubisky’s status remains in doubt, at least the Bears are getting clarity on the injury report at other positions on the depth chart.
